American Literature and Composition

Course Description: American Literature and Composition is a chronological study of
American writers from the Colonial Period to the present. The student develops
an understanding of the ways the period of a work of literature affects its
structure and how the chronology of a work of literature affects its
meaning. The course also incorporates
grammar, library research, and writing skills.
Objectives:
Students will study the following:
- Beginnings to 1800’s—Colonial Period and Native American
Literature
- Drama—The Crucible
- 1750-1850—Revolutionary Period Literature, Romanticism, and
Transcendentalism
(2nd Semester 11 B will cover)
- 1845-1910—Civil War Literature, Realism, Regionalism, and
Naturalism
- Novel Study
- 1910-1930—Harlem Renaissance and beginnings of Modernism
- Research Paper
- 1930-Present—Modernism
- Drama— RCPS Recommended reading list selection
- Vocabulary and writing/grammar will be ongoing throughout the year
Materials Required: Each student needs to keep a
designated notebook for this class. Students will be taking notes and receiving
handouts often; success depends upon keeping up with these materials for
reference and study. Most of our coursework will come from the textbook Elements of Literature 5th course. Damage
to and/or failure to return this textbook will result in replacement fees at
the end of the semester.
Grading System: Grading is based on standards. Students are evaluated
according to mastery of the standard, and they receive multiple opportunities
to demonstrate this mastery. Points will be assigned to each task. For example
an in class assignment may be worth 100 points whereas a project or essay may
be worth 300 points, and a quiz worth 200 points. Points are assigned at the
discretion of the teacher.
Make up work is the student’s
responsibility, and is due within two days of returning to school (for each
excused absence). Any work that is announced prior to the student’s absence
will be due the day the student returns. A test announced before the student’s
absence may be given to the student the day he or she returns to school. All work not made up within the allotted
days, OR that is missed because of an unexcused absence will receive a grade of
zero
Classroom Rules and Discipline Plan:
All rules stated
in Alpha student handbook will be followed in our classroom. As well as these 5
classroom rules: 1. Be in dress code
2. Be prepared for class 3. Use appropriate
tone and language 4. Be on time 5. Respect your space and others
Consequences for
not following these rules consist of: 1) warning, 2) student-teacher conference
with parent call, 3) referral to an administrator. Severe incidents warrant severe consequences
and result in an immediate referral to administration.

or her highest potential this semester. He or she will be asked to work
diligently to complete the tasks I have set before him or her. However, nothing will be asked of your
student that he or she is incapable of achieving. The right attitude and work ethic will
produce the grades in this classroom environment. Your support is appreciated
and vital to the success of your student in the class.
